EUTW Series XVI – The EU Decision-Making System – is now published! This book provides an in-depth analysis of the implementation and coordination within EU institutions. Feel free to check it out!
Those interested in European Union studies often find themselves puzzled by the EU's organizational structure and unique decision-making process. Its framework includes intergovernmental cooperation bodies like the European Council and the Council of the European Union, as well as entities with a structure similar to the separation of powers in democratic countries—such as the European Commission, the European Parliament, the Court of Justice of the European Union, and the European Central Bank, which are supranational organizations. Additionally, there are bodies with both intergovernmental cooperation and supranational characteristics, such as the European External Action Service (EEAS), the European Economic and Social Committee, and the European Committee of the Regions.   The political system of the EU exhibits a characteristic of being "below sovereign states but above international organizations," gradually shifting from intergovernmental cooperation to supranationalism. The decision-making process is complex, multi-leveled, and multi-faceted, requiring integration and analysis on both theoretical and policy levels to understand the EU's operational framework.   This book offers a comprehensive view at theory, policy, and examples, covering topics such as the EU's organizational and decision-making system, the leading role of the European Council in decision-making, the operations of the Council of the European Union after the “Treaty of Lisbon” came into effect, the interaction of supranationalism and intergovernmentalism in the European Commission, the expanded functions of the European Parliament, multi-level analysis of the political power of the Court of Justice of the European Union, the development and challenges of the European Central Bank's single currency policy, the role and challenges of the European External Action Service (EEAS), EU defense cooperation and Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO), and the execution and coordination of the EU's climate adaptation strategy in the regions by the European Economic and Social Committee and the Committee of the Regions     Visit the publishing center for more details and to make a purchase: https://press.ntu.edu.tw/

The 2025 European Community Studies Association Taiwan (ECSA-Taiwan) Annual Academic Conference and National Graduate Student on EU Studies will be held on 9 May 2025. We welcome enthusiastic submissions!
2025 European Community Studies Association Taiwan (ECSA-Taiwan) Annual Academic Conference and National Graduate Student on EU Studies Title: The EU’s Challenges against Trump: Military, Economic, and Values Call for Papers: The2025 European Community Studies Association Taiwan (ECSA-Taiwan) Annual Academic Conference is the association's flagship research forum, gathering leading researchers and young scholars in European studies to engage in academic dialogue. The return of Donald Trump to the White House has become the most important international event of 2025, as his pressure and threats target not only China and Russia, but also his closest allies, all of whom have been named and criticized by the West. The EU is already facing economic stagnation and political turmoil, and the imposition of Trump’s tariffs has made transatlantic trade conflicts an unavoidable issue. Militarily, the EU or NATO will have to take on greater responsibility to end the war in Ukraine. Economically, the EU will adopt "strong and proportionate countermeasures" to retaliate against U.S. tariffs on European steel and aluminum exports. Trump’s policies have completely altered U.S. military and economic strategies, shifting from a liberal cooperative approach to a more realist approach that prioritizes national interests, aiming to make America great again. In light of this, the conference invites academic experts and graduate students to explore the challenges of the two routes (EU and U.S.) from various perspectives and analyze their impact on international dynamics.   Conference Date and Location:
