“Small Islands; Big Issues: Taiwan and Ireland in Comparative Perspective" (University College Dublin, 1-4 September 2011)

This is the first ever conference on Ireland and Taiwan.
In both locations we can see histories, politics, and cultures marked by contested identities, as well as struggles over democracy and human rights.
Many of the ways which we use to talk about the wider world, using ideas like colonialism; globalization; and nationalism and divided societies can be used to help us think about these two interesting and beautiful islands.
Taiwan and Ireland are small islands living beside more powerful neighbours with which they have complex histories.
Both countries, in different ways, have a cultural influence far out of proportion to their size. Irish theatre and literature is world famous; Taiwan’s is the creative factory for much of the emerging North-East Asian cultural space.
Around 40 scholars are planning to participate: from the UK, Taiwan Ireland, the USA, and China.
