2011 EU-Asia Pacific Trade and Economy Forum, held by the EU Research Centre at NCCU, took place in the 5th of December. The Forum saw bigwigs such as Polish Representative to Taipei Marek Wejtko, Chief of EUTW Dr Hungdah Su, Dr Guo Chiu-Ching of EU Research Centre at TKU. Topics including The Lessons of European Financial Crisis for Asia, Asian Economic Integration and Prospect and so forth were discussed and heated discussion were roused.

Dr Kan, who was in charge of this forum, noted that the interest the Taiwanese society and academics take in the EU has increased in recent years, and as the crisis in Europe affects the whole world the politics in Europe is no longer limited to research topics of scholars--the public and investors also need to understand the EU better.

With regards to the ongoing crisis which ordinary people care most, the scholars argued that the EU has a single currency yet lacks a unified fiscal policy, which remains a great concern for the survival of the euro. It was also contended that countries in trouble such as Greece were able to join the euro zone--thanks to the embellishment of Goldman Sachs--at the expense of the other countries. That said, the European Financial Crisis teaches Asian countries a lesson. By being cautious with currency policy and managing risk properly, Asia should be capable of avoiding the recurrence of the crisis.
